A static QR code points straight at a URL baked into the pattern. A tracked QR uses a redirect link you can update and measure. Both scan the same way for the customer. The difference is what you can change and learn after print.
How static QR codes work
You generate a code from a fixed URL (your menu, WiFi page, or contact form). The pattern never changes. If you need a new destination, you reprint.
Static codes are fine when:
- The link rarely changes (e.g. Google Maps directions)
- You only need a handful of prints
- You are not comparing campaigns
How tracked QR codes work
The printed code points to a short redirect URL. When someone scans, they land on your chosen page, and the redirect service logs the scan (time, sometimes device type, not personal identity by default).
That lets you:
- Change the landing page without reprinting
- Compare two leaflet areas or two offers
- Retire an old promotion without wasting stock
When tracking is worth it
Tracked links pay off on recurring print: door drops, trade shows, business cards you reorder monthly. If you spend £200 or more on a leaflet run and might print again, knowing which headline or area got scans beats guessing.
Static is enough for one-off event posters or internal staff WiFi cards.
Print rules stay the same
Tracking does not change size or contrast requirements. Follow QR code print tips and test proofs at final size. flyerfly lets you swap tracked QR links on leaflets and cards without redoing the whole layout each time.
