Customers within five miles: US local marketing radius

Most US local businesses should market to customers within five miles first, before paying for city-wide SEO or ads.

Draw a five-mile circle around your shop or office. That is where most of your revenue already comes from, even if your analytics show visitors from across the metro. Marketing works best when it respects that circle instead of chasing the whole city.

Restaurants, salons, gyms, and home services all share the same physics: distance kills conversion.

Five miles is a planning tool, not a law

In dense cities, five miles might be too wide. In rural exurbs, you may extend to ten. Use drive time at rush hour, not map distance alone. If you cannot reach a job profitably, do not advertise there.

Flyers beat broad geotargeting

Facebook and Google geofences drift. Flyers in apartment complexes and neighborhoods inside the ring are the target. Split batches by subdivision; track QR scans per drop.

Door hangers on permitted streets and lobby tables with management approval often outperform a perfectly drawn digital radius that the ad platform ignores after midnight.

Offers for nearby only

Put your neighborhood name on the flyer. "Westlake dental cleaning special" filters better than "Austin dentist." Add hours and parking notes locals care about.

Compare with customers within five miles (UK) for leaflet terminology.

Start with one ring segment

Pick the densest quadrant of your circle. Run 2,000 flyers. Count new customers for 30 days. Expand only where data supports it.

School zones and commuter routes define your five miles as much as the map does. A parent who picks up kids daily is a better target than a commuter who only drives through on the motorway.

Combine flyers with Google Business Profile posts about the same offer. Online and offline matching messages stick faster than either channel alone.

Dry cleaners, tutors, and mobile vets all win on drive time. If they cannot reach you in fifteen minutes, they are not your customer even if they clicked an ad.

Redraw your radius after rush-hour tests. Five miles at 9 a.m. is not five miles at 5 p.m.
